RAN Clearance Diving Operations in the Gulf War – 1991

During operations in Kuwait, CDT3 had completed the following missions:

Ports cleared 4
Total sea-bed area searched 2,157,200 sqm
Total jackstay laid 155 kms
Total jackstay laid for other nations 51 kms
Total number wrecks surveyed 32
Total number sea mines dealt with 60
Total pieces of ordnance cleared 234,986
Total number of ships cleared 7
Total number of enemy demolition charges rendered safe 30
Total number of buildings, ports & oil refinery facilities cleared of ordnance and booby traps Lost count!!

CDT3 had distinguished itself well in Kuwait and earned RAN Clearance Diving Team Branch the highest international reputation for skill and professionalism. Sea mines and ordnance recovered by CDT3 are on display in Naval Establishments and the Australian War Memorial for viewing by the public.

Decorations During the period the following decorations were awarded to the Team or individual Team members:

Conspicuous Service Cross: 2 Order of Australia Medal: 1 Conspicuous Service Medal: 4 Australian Meritorious Unit Citation: 1 Admirals Commendation:1
